Dear Readers,

First, I want to thank you for reading my blog over the year and 1/2 that I've been with Urban Fashion Network. I started with UFN as an intern while balancing school and work full-time. People thought I was crazy to take on this internship on top of everything I was doing but I was desperate for a taste of fashion in my life and like they say, if you want something bad enough, you make it work. All the sleepless nights has certainly been worth it! I've had the opportunity to attend some of the best fashion shows, galas and fashion events in Seattle! Along the way, I've also met some amazing people who I have established friendships with.

I don't think I ever shared this milestone on my blog but I graduated this past summer with my B.S. in Business Administration. The months to follow, I spent it trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and although it was a very difficult decision to make, I decided this year would be my last year blogging for UFN. I'm not exactly sure what I will be doing with myself but that's what I will be doing with my spare time - figuring it out.

4th Annual Sips & Shoes: A Wine Tasting and Shoe Extravaganza

Whoever thought of this idea is a genius! If you love wine and shoes this is the event for you! This year Seattle Uncorked is hosting their 4th Annual Sips & Shoes extravaganza. They’ve teamed up with five local shoe stores (Cleminitine, DSW, John Fleuvog, Sole Food, and Shoetini) and 30 wineries for you to sample the latest wines while you browse the new shoe arrivals / collections. There will also be a complementary pasta bar provided by the Hyatt. Money raised from the event will benefit Ryther Child Center

Portland Fashion Week

It took me two and a half hours to drive to Portland to attend Portland Fashion Week and it was well worth it. If you didn't know, Portland Fashion Week is the only fashion week in the world that’s focused on eco-friendly apparel. I couldn't wait to see the bamboo runway or photograph side by side with Fashion Wire Press.

The featured designers for the Saturday night show included Jason Matio, Seattle designer Lizzie Parker, Jantzen Swimwear, and Mehdi.

Two Amazing Fashion Shows in One Night

This past Friday night was a hectic one for Tarah and I because of one little problem: we were booked to attend two shows in the same night. The two shows were the 2nd Annual EcoLavish Fashion Show and Luly Yang’s annual couture show. The good news was we made it on time to catch both shows. The Luly Yang show started a little earlier than EcoLavish so we were able to dash out during Luly Yang’s intermission to make it to the Engine Room at Georgetown Studios for EcoLavish. The bad news is that we missed Luly Yang’s finale. Hey, you lose some, you win some right?

EcoLavish was put on by Half Past Lavish (an event planning company ran by FGI member Courtney Russell) and the goal behind EcoLavish is to prove that eco-friendly apparel can be stylish, fun, and anything but boring. Being that this is the only fashion show in the northwest with a green runway and full on eco-friendly designers / apparel, I think Courtney is on to something big. The designers included Renee Corrick of Six Degrees, Kimberlee Iblings of Deco Modiste, Teresa Remple of Texture Clothing and finale designer Lizzie Parker of Lizzie Parker Eco Atelier.

The Luly Yang annual couture show was held at Fairmount Olympic Hotel with the theme ‘The Creation’ which was influenced by Michelangelo’s artwork. Just like the previous years, Luly Yang donated a portion of the proceeds to Camp Korey, a camp in Carnation, WA fully staffed with a medical team and counselors for children with a serious illness to attend. We were able to catch the Camp Korey show where the children wore Luly Yang on the runway and the client portion of the runway show where previous client walked the runway with their custom made garment.

After attending both shows, Tarah and I joined our blogging friends Jess and Nadine for a late night dinner at Taco Del Mar.

BFW: Sweat and Spice Spectacular

I attended the Sweat and Spice Spectacular as part of Bellevue Fashion Week tonight and didn’t have any expectations at all with one exception – I was expecting to see some athletic wear. The event description states, ‘enjoy savory treats, witness incredible live performances, explore our latest functional product line and leave inspired.’ They were able to deliver all that they promised and more.

The event was presented by Lululemon Athlectica with all proceeds benefiting the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club. The show started out with Bollywood Infusion Dance Performers and they did an awesome job! Then we had Kathy Haggart, president of the Boys and Girls Club welcome the audience with a thank you to the attendees. Shortly, Allison Forsyth, owner of Lululemon Athelectica and Canadian alpine ski team alumnus took the stage. She shared with us her story of becoming a professional athletic and the day her race ended due to a crash days before her chance for the gold medal during the 2006 Olympics. She also shared with us a tear jerking story about her mother who was diagnosing with breast cancer and how fortunate she felt to have come home from the Olympics to spend time with her before her passing. The speech was definitely a little longer than I had expected but as promised, she did inspire me. She left us with the message that life happens and when it does you can either say, ‘poor me’, or pick yourself back up and keep going. I thought that was a positive message for the little ones who did attend.

Now the crowd was ready for the fashion! When the models entered the runway, they were not your typical female model – 5’9, 105lbs, and check bones has high as a sky scraper. Instead they were athletics who worked in the fitness industry walk the catwalk with their tricks. Bev Currier and Maika Manring from The Bar Method stood on the run way with a balancing act on double bars all proving that the gear they were wearing from Lululemon Athelectica was indeed functional.

After the show ended, Tarah and I were grabbing our cap for our lens when we spotted a group of girls battling at the end of the runway mimicking the tricks they were just presented with. It was quite adorable.

This show was definitely for people who have a strong love for the active life and the gear necessary to make it happen. Yes, not so much for me.

Nordstrom Bellevue Square Fall Fashion Show

Held at the Hyatt, the Nordstrom Bellevue Square fourth annual fall runway fashion show was a sold out event. With approximately 500 guests, 100% of the ticket sales went towards the Detlef Schrempf Foundation! Featured designers included Diane von Furstenberg, Elizabeth and James, Haute Hippie, Hugo Boss, Leifsdotter, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Milly, Rag & Bone and Vince.

The essential items for Fall 2009 according to Nordstrom are…

For women… leather, updated sheath dress, the ‘boyfriend’ blazer, ruffled blouse, leggings, tall boots, seasonless sandals, and metal hardware.

I’d like to add faux fur…

And deep colors…

For men… leather, a cardigan, lean silhouettes, plaid, boots, Nordstrom guide to men’s style by Tom Julian.

…and I totally agree with lean silhouettes..

... and after watching the documentary, Anna Wintour proved to me three things:

one.. She is highly influential...

IADT Imagine Fashion Show

When I think of the International Academy of Design and Technology’s annual fashion show – Imagine, I think of the big white Bryant Park like tent set up in the school’s parking lot. This year IADT presented another well executed fashion show. There were over 100 garments and 9 categories including casual and active, day, career, cocktail, alternative, club, costume, evening, and bridal wear.

Fashion First

There are a handful of fashion shows that I look forward to seeing every year and Fashion First is one of them. The idea behind Fashion First is to showcase the best fall fashion within our local boutiques and designers while benefiting the Starlight foundation. The event was definitely charity heavy and full of fashion.

John Curley from Evening Magazine kicked off the night with an auction. The auction included a seven day stay in Cancun, jersey from Matt Hasselbeck, wine collections, and a one on one consultation and garment made of your choice with Project Runway contestant, Blaine (which was auctioned for $2,000).

Tonight's line up included...

La Ree (pictured above), The Finerie, Totokaelo, merge, Tatters, Clutch, Impluse, Heidi K Jewelry, the winners of Seamless in Seattle, and student designs from the Art Institute.

On the runway there were a five trends that I spotted...
1. Lots of mixture with gray and black
2. Black Boots, Booties, and Gladiator heels
3. Fur vests
4. The boyfriend blazer
5. Big everything from hair to bold colorful jewelry.

Once again, Fashion First threw another great show. :)

From Fashion Faux Pas to Fashion Fabulous!

A few local designers were put to the challenge by the Ruby Room to play fairy godmother and beautify the unwanted evening gowns left behind. Once transformed, the evening gowns were then displayed at the Fashion Faux Pas to Fashion Fabulous fashion show where they were auction off. Although I was exhausted from last night's Product Runway show, I couldn't contain my excitement for the Boutique Culture Warehouse Sale going on this weekend. This morning I was able to wake up at a decent time and rush over to Fremont Studios to join the early birds. The highlights of my adventure included:

If you haven't already heard, September 10th is reserved for Fashion's Night out in NYC and all across the world in some of fashion's biggest capitals! Designers, celebrities, models, and any name in the fashion industry will come together in department stores, boutiques, etc. to encourage customers to shop in hopes to boost the fashion industry and save jobs.

This weekend, Boutique Culture is hosting a warehouse sale with some of our local fashion boutiques / designers and I'm calling it Seattle's Fashion Night Out. Why? Because you will be seeing boutiques and designers who are a big part of our local fashion industry such as Spun, La Rousse, Clutch, Jessica Milton, and Deli. Your local celebrity supporting this event is Logan Neitzel of Lifetime's Season 6 Project Runway! This will be a two day event and many of the merchandise being sold will be anywhere from 40 to 80% off and new fall arrivals will be 10- 20% off. To top it off, this event's admission is free!

Collaboration: Vogue and The Bellevue Collection's Fashion Week '09

It is not hard to miss the major development and renovations in downtown Bellevue these past few years especially the endless expansion of The Bellevue Collection. This place easily became one of my favorite spots to shop for luxury brands and it continues to get better with new retail store openings such as Michael Kors, Hugo Boss, True Religion, and 7 For All Mankind (yes, you can now find these stores in Bellevue Sqaure).

Every year The Bellevue Collection hosts their own fashion week on the Eastside and today they announced some very exciting news - The Bellevue Collection will be collaborating with Vogue to bring you Front Row Fashion! This will be a runway show produce by the fashion magazine and will feature fashion from The Bellevue Collection. Ann Vincent, the director of merchandising for Vogue will be sharing fall fashion must-haves. Also included in the six day extravaganza is a special screening of The September Issue at Lincoln Square Cinemas. Yes, all very exciting stuff!

2009 Nordstrom Designer Preview Fashion Show

Honestly, I didn't sleep well last night because I was too excited about attending tonight's Nordstorm Designer Preview Show. There were three things, to be exact, that I was anticipating: 1) testing out my new Canon SLR because I was getting super tired of producing poor photo quality to all you readers; 2) Fall fashion! I love love love fall fashion; and 3) the designers! Oh, I'm talking about Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and my girlfriend Versace! Yes, they were all there.

Held at the Paramount Theatre, the doors opened at 6:30pm for guests to enjoy cocktails and hors d'oevuvres while they mingle and did some boutique hopping. Each designer featured in the fashion show had their own little boutique set up for guests to get a better look at the garments that were being featured in the show. Guests were also able to pre-order the featured fashion; however, the only thing missing were the actual designers. Oh how a girl can wish...

So just how I like it, the show started at 8:30 as promised. Guests were seated fairly quickly and the show was rolling in no time. Already too ecstatic about the show and antsy to see what's to come, I was thankful that there weren't any long speeches. We got the chance to meet the new Seattle Art Museum's president to whom the show was benefiting and then out strutted Gucci.

The featured designers in the Nordstrom Designer Preview show were Gucci, Missoni, Stella McCartney, Marni, Versace, Nina Ricci, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel.

This was by far one of the best fashion shows I've attended thus far. It was so well organized and the fashion did not disappoint. I will go to bed a happy girl tonight!

InspirAsian Fashion Show

The International Examiner celebrated their 35th Anniversary at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center on Pier 66 this evening. The agenda included a live auction, dinner, and a fashion show featuring local Asian designers.

Five designers were chosen to showcase their collection. They included:
Bo Choi: Graduate of the University of California at Davis in Fashion Design and Studio Art. All her pieces were in black proving that one girl can never have too many LBD's.

Vivian Hsu: Vivian has a broad background when it comes to fashion. I've seen her photograph the hottest fashion shows, I also know that she's model, and now a designer too. She's well rounded when it comes to fashion so I wasn't surprise to see her exquisite collection of evening gowns. Each gown portrayed elegance and rich jewel-like colors.

Jessica Louie: After earning her B.A. in Architecture from the University of Washington, she will be continuing her education and pursue a fashion degree from Parsons School for Design. I loved the simplicity of Jessica's collection and her collection was very fun and flirty with full shirts and bouncy dresses that strut the runway.

Kelly Su: After graduating from the Art Institue of Seattle, Kelly spent the past 6 years designing for Nordstrom's Halogen and lingerie label. Pieces from her collection were versatile from day to evening and was made for the girl on the go.

Lennura Zhataganova: As an international student from Kazakhstan, she will be graduating from Seattle Central Community College in Apparel Design this June. Her collection was inspired by fabric colors and textures which explains the memorable yellow hip length coat.

It was truly inspiring to see the talents of the Asian community together in one evening and the event was overall fun and enjoyable.

Earth Day

The goal behind Earth Day is to cause more awareness and appreciation of our earth's environment. This day is celebrated in over 140 countries. However, being that I am a Seattlelite, every day feels like earth day. The people here really embrace being eco-friendly in every possible way. Think of our intense recycling system that comes with a cheat sheet, our local restaurants and their eco-friendly to go boxes, the number of workplaces that participates in composting, etc. It's unavoidable. Being green is really the new black and this is definitely not a FAD or trend because I don't see it going away... ever.

First off, I have to apologize about the hiatus. It’s been over a month since I last blogged or attended a fashion event. Not only was it a quiet winter for the Seattle fashion scene but I was also having a quiet moment of my own – but I’m back now!

Last Sunday night my good friend Sandy picked me up and we headed over to the Last Super Club in Pioneer Square to catch the Couture Carnivale fashion show. Not only was it my first event since my hiatus but it was also the first time this year seeing my friend Sandy. Yep, life has been busy. We arrived about 45 minutes after doors opened and was greeted with a packed house. The show had a burlesque / circus like theme to it. The hostess, Anna Lange (owner of Pretty Parlor) wore a cute five tiered multiple colored layered dress. I’d have to say she was absolutely fun with her faux accent and curly pigtails. The show featured four local boutiques including House of Pretty Parlor. Each boutique showcased vintage recycled clothing perfect for spring. The show was presented by Margidavid Salon who was also responsible for the fabulous big hair the models sported. There were three burlesque performances too but unfortunately due to my lack of attention to details, I overlooked that information in the brochure and skipped out early. To my defense it was a Sunday night show ;).

Tarah (UFN founder and my sweet boss) recently emailed me a few shows for spring so I will say that things will start to pick up. If you're interested in the details please visit the UFN event calendar otherwise stick around!

Project Red Dress Winner!

Attending the 2nd Annual Project Red Dress competition last night at the Fairview Olympic Hotel was the perfect way to welcome Valentine’s Day! Benefiting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Movement, the event entailed 10 students from local fashion schools competing to win a $3,000 scholarship, and a window display with their dress at the downtown Macy’s Store.

Brooke and Monti of Movin’ 92.5 were the hostesses of the evening. Prior to the show, the contestants were given limited time to design and create a red dress (same concept as Project Runway). The Project Red Dress fashion show was held to judge the garments and determine the winner. This year Project Red Dress welcomed back Nick Verreos (Project Runway Season 2 contestant and NIKOLAKI designer) to be a part of their judge panel. Accompanying Nick on the judge panel included Laura Cassidy - Fashion Editor of Seattle Metropolitan, Victora Glenn - Victoria’s Bridal Couture and V Custom Design, Rose Dennis - President, ARD, LLC, and Aysel Andreson, M.D. - The Art and Science of Beauty. The judge panel took into consideration the contestants’ design concept, construction of the dress, creativity, and overall fit.

Taking first place was contestant Rosie Kohlmeier of New York Fashion Academy. Her fun and flirty cocktail dress finished off with an enormous bow in the front, had the best care in construction. Although she took home $3000 that evening, the look on her face when Nick Verreos announced her as the winner was priceless!

Project Red Dress

Seattle is rolling out the red carpet for the 2nd Annual Project Red Dress design competition sponsored by Seattle Metropolitan Magazine. Fashion students from 6 schools will compete to win a $3,000 scholarship while helping to raise money for The American Heart Association. Celebrity judges including Nick Verros from Project Runway will be on hand to review custom red dress designs submitted by contest participants.

Tickets start at $50 for general admission. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $75 and include premier runway seating and a swag bag. Last year’s event sold out so get your tickets today!

Happy New Year!
It’s hard to believe that we are almost through the month of January! Recuperating from the holidays was very much needed but now it’s back to all biz! Statistics show that a month after the New Year celebration, only 65% of the people who set New Year resolutions are still hanging on. Although I would love to be a part of the 65%, I have to admit I haven’t given my New Year resolutions much thought… BUT that’s okay because help is knocking on my door (and of course yours too…!)

Closet fly and Organized Innovations, LLC is partnering up to bring you, ‘Get Organized, Get Styled.’ Held on Tuesday, January 27th at Mercer Island Community Center from 6:30PM to 8:30PM, Stacey Anderson and Mayna Sgaramella will present ways to help you revamp your look and organize your workspace for a fresh start to 2009! I caught with both ladies for a quick and fun Q&A session…

YK: Stacey, tell me a little bit about yourself and Organized Innovations, LLC .

SA: My background is in medical office management where I fine tuned my organizing skills with regards to systems, paper management and figuring out the right solutions for everyone involved. I started Organized Innovations as a way to work with the general public who also struggle with many of the same things as the corporate world. I get to work hands-on with my clients teaching them and guiding them in their organizing process. Sometimes people just need to be told it is ok to get rid of things, and others need to know what to get rid of.

YK: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

SA: Having people see success in what we are doing. My goal is to have them learn the organizing skills they need to stay organized on a regular basis. Most often people just need the help to dig out from the piles and aren’t sure where to start. I get to help them start anew and feel stress free for the first time in a long time. Their smiles are often the great reward.

YK: What is the most common help sought after from your clients?

SA: Paper – too much paper for everyone. Most people are overwhelmed by how much information and paperwork they receive on a daily basis and don’t know where to begin. Do I keep this, and if so for how long? Where do I keep it? Why do I keep it?

YK: How is that problem solved?

SA: I teach clients what they need to keep and what the guidelines are. But I also help them create a process that makes sense for them to implement and keep up. No system is going to work unless it makes sense for you and your family/group.

YK: The concept of work life balance is becoming more and more popular in the work place. Has this also played a part in your business and if so, how?

SA: Yes, many people have to work harder and longer because they are overwhelmed by such things as emails and paper. I work to teach them techniques that will help them reduce the paper and emails. I also work with them on time management so that they can create a plan for their day. People waste in excess of 1 hour a day because of disorganization. I help them to regain that hour and spend it doing what they like, not what they don’t.

YK: What is one small adjustment or change a person can make in their work environment to reduce stress and / or clutter?

SA: You have to do maintenance. Many people think that once they create a system it will just work on its own. Daily or weekly you need to take 15 minutes or more to file, plan your day and do the things on your to-do list. Things are constantly coming in and if you don’t process them out, you will not be able to stay ahead. Take time to plan and act.

YK: Thank you Stacey!

YK: Mayna, tell me a little bit about yourself and Closet Fly.

MS: After graduating from Columbia College Chicago and majoring in Interactive Multimedia, I moved to Washington in 2001 to work as a business consultant teaching teams and individuals how to be more efficient, results-oriented, and follow their passion. I started to follow my own passion and took what started as just helping friends and family with their wardrobe to the next level and started my own business, Closet Fly, in 2005. Since then, I’ve been educating men and women on knowing their body type, recognizing a good fit, and how to shop smart so they can look and feel their best every day. Sometimes people just need support and an outside “eye” to sort through what they have, decide what to get rid of, and choose new pieces that work for their lifestyle. Volunteering for organizations like Dress For Success Seattle keeps me grounded and connected.

YK: What is it about your job that you love most?

MS: Seeing the transformation people make after a couple sessions of working with me. They start to see themselves in a new way and begin expressing their best self with their wardrobe. It is very much like the guests say on TLC’s What Not To Wear after they’ve experienced their transformation: “It’s not just about the clothes.”

YK: What is one of the most common wardrobe no-no’s you’ve encounter?

MS: One of the biggest mistakes I see is poor fit. I have a lot of clients that are 5’3” and under, which technically classifies them as ‘petite’, and many of them wear regular sized clothing which is not proportioned for their body at all, so they end up looking shorter or unpolished.

YK: Are there any basic rules you have in regards to style and fashion that we should follow?

MS: YES! If everyone would buy a full length mirror and do a top-down check before they left the house each morning, many mistakes could be avoided. Learning how to recognize a good fit is something I stress with my clients and once they see how fabulous they look in proper fitting clothing, it’s hard to go back to wearing something that looks just “ok”. Also, always shop with a list and a budget…and know what you already have in your closet before you go!

YK: What are some basic things you think every woman should investing it?

MS: I have a list of the “Top 10 Items Every Woman Should Have in Their Wardrobe” and on that list are:
- A light weight wool black pant suit. You can always break up the pant suit and if it’s in a year-round fabric like a light-weight wool and you care for it properly, you’ll use it for years.
- A cashmere sweater in a flattering color. You can layer it or wear it alone and it feels oh so soft!
- A fabulous dress (black, navy, or other neutral). This is where accessorizing gets fun, but you have to have good quality basics in order to pull it off. Every woman should have one dress that makes them feel feminine, sexy, and fabulous—at any size or shape!

We’re all sending a message to the world with our appearance, so we might as well put some intention behind that message and invest in showing the world our best selves. What message are you sending?

Goodbye 2008, Hello 2009!

2008 has treated me very well! It was full of travels, success, love, surprises (both good and bad), and many dreams coming true… and to my surprise it all happened with one ‘new year resolution’ in mind – live according to my heart’s desire. Here are the main highlights of 2008:

• I kicked off the year with a vacay to Oahu celebrating an anniversary.
• I met my great friend Sydney and joined her at FashionFirst.
• I got a promotion at the 8 to 5 gig. Well deserved!
• I celebrated my birthday will my best 5 girlfriends and sisters with an overdue girls’ night out in town.
• I went to NY for the first time and attended New York’s Mercedes Benz Spring 2009 Fashion Week. (WoW!)
• I partnered up with Tarah at Urban Fashion Network and am getting my ticket to the hottest shows in Seattle with a small price of BLOG.
• Getting the opportunity to meet Seattle’s influential people in the fashion industry such as Lizzie Parker, Fashion Ethic entrepreneur – Candace Caldwell, etc.
• I got my first apartment in my dream city (not NY just yet)!

This year has truly been a blessed one. I am so thankful for all the people who’ve supported me through it all. I’ve held on to many great long time friendships while gaining some new ones along the way. I am leaving 2008 feeling loved, successful, and satisfied… but more determined than ever.

In 2009 I am looking forward to many more blessing! It will be the little simple things in life I’m choosing to focus on such has more sleep, exercise, and taking two seconds to breathe – basically stop overworking myself to death.

CRAVEshow 2008 - Seattle’s Premier Holiday Shopping Party

After a long day of work I picked up Sydney and we headed to McCaw Hall at Seattle Center for the Seattle Holiday CRAVEshow. One thing I love about the CRAVEshows is the fact that there is always so much going on. We had two floors full of vendors to shop from, two stages of entertainment, and a spa and wellness area to pamper ourselves. We roamed the halls of venders stopping by a few booths such as Fashion Ethics, La Ree Boutique, and the Liminist photography booth for a quick photo.

Given I was exhausted; I didn’t go too crazy with the shopping. I did, however, make a few Christmas purchases. My favorite purchase for the night was an ornament by Girlie Girl Gifts I bought for myself (hey, I deserve a gift too). They customize the character to look like you. See any resemblance? ;)

Five Minutes with Kimberly Arrington (co-owner of Clutch)

Clutch is located in the heart of downtown Seattle on 4th Avenue at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. Owners Kimberly and Carrie Arrington started Clutch in August 2007 (around the same time Urban Fashion Network began too). Their goal behind Clutch is to bring Seattleites a boutique filled with exquisite independent designer bags and that is exactly what they have done. During FGI / UFN’s networking event, I had the chance to sipped champagne with Kimberly and asked her a few questions.

YK: What inspired Clutch?

KA: The idea started when we couldn’t find a handbag one day. We noticed the clothing boutiques don’t carry handbags and if they do, they are never on sale! We have shoe stores but no handbag stores. It was driving me nuts!

YK: I have a fancy holiday party to attend. What would you recommend?

KA: Alexis Hudson Snowbird in emboss snake. It is pleated on the sides, sides and it’s a little luxury for not a lot of money - $420.

The second bag is also by Alexis Hudson and it’s the Mont Blanc in Grape. It’s our most popular seller for $525.

YK: They say a girl’s life is in her purse. Do you mind sharing what’s inside your purse?

KA: sure. I have my wallet, blackberry, brush, a stash of chocolate, a novel, bus pass, some personal mail, and my water bottle.

This morning as I was walking to work in the freezing weather I realize the Macys star was up! That only means two things: 1) the holidays are here (yay!) and; 2) it’s December! I am still having a hard time believing it’s already December. This year has really been a fast (but good) year and it will only continue in full speed. However, before you blink, here are a few great events for the month of December you may want to attend:

• Dec. 4th @ 6PM – FGI / UFN Networking Event @ Clutch: This event is open to all Fashion Group International and Urban Fashion Network Members to mingle with complimentary champagne, wine, and desserts. Green Chic

It’s official – green is the new black! This past Saturday night was spent at Café Metropolitan with Tarah and some of her girlfriends for the Green Chic – An Ethical / Eco fashion show. Put on by Fashion Ethic and En Mode Productions the proceeds went to The Adubon Society.

All the pieces on the runaway were from Fashion Ethic, an online boutique ran by eco-friendly supporter and entrepreneur - Candice Caldwell. Fashion Ethic’s mission is to be fashionably responsible and by that they mean: sweatshop free labor, fair wages for workers, sustainable fibers, organic cotton, and low impact dyes.

Seattle Goodwill’s Glitter Gala Sale

Q&A with Eco-friendly Fashion Designer Lizzie Parker

I joined Tweed along with other supporters to welcome their newest designer – Lizzie Parker tonight. The celebration was held at Tweed Boutique in Greenwood from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Tweed (owned by Danielle Luartes) is now carrying Lizzie Parker’s full collection. I sat down with Lizzie Parker for a quick Q&A to get to know her a little better.

YK: Congrats Lizzie on your new home! Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

LP: Well, I worked at Microsoft for 5 years and got a business degree at Hope College. I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer but thought it was more of a fun activity. In the end I’m glad I did it that way because you will always be able to design if you have that ability naturally, it will never leave you but to be successfully you’ll have to know the business aspect.

YK: How did you get started in fashion?

LP: I started by helping out with trunk shows through Worth Corporation and eventually started Lizzie Parker which has been around for 2 and ½ years now.

YK: Lizzie Parker is well known for being eco-friendly and we’ve all heard about everyone else who is taking fashion towards sustainability. Why did you choose to make your line eco-friendly?

LP: For my kids. I don’t want to leave a mess for my children. I always try to make a difference. My signature fabric is organic bamboo jersey which is the first to be certified in the market and I also use organic cotton. 95% of my manufacturing is in Seattle.

YK: Tell me about your Spring 2009 collection? I saw it in PFW and absolutely love the fuchsia color you used.

LP: The fuchsia pieces were made at a lower price for the economy but season less is the way to go. I try to do classic pieces.

YK: I saw your collection in PFW and now you are partnering with Tweed Bountique. For a designer who has been around for 2 and ½ years, I would say you’ve been pretty darn successful. What are your words of wisdom for those designers who are beginning?

LP: (rolling eyes sarcastically with a smile) Find a mentor. I was lucky and had great mentors. Stay true to yourself and what you believe. Talk to people on the business side of things too.

YK: Ok, my last question. Why Tweed Boutique?

LP: My line has done very well here and Danielle and I click the moment we meet. Everything just worked out well so it felt like the right thing to do.

EcoLavish: An Eco-Conscious Fashion Show

Tonight the EcoLavish Fashion Show, put on by Half Past Lavish and sponsored by Urban Fashion Network was held at the Fremont Abbey Art Center . The show started at 8 pm and was hosted by Janaea and Susan from Seattle ’s Beauty Revolution Magazine.

Given the name of the fashion show – EcoLavish, I had already anticipated what the show was going to entail, a healthy dose of fashion with plenty of opportunity to practice sustainability. EcoLavish sure did not disappoint me. Not only did they practice but they implemented sustainability in their show!

They started with their hosts from Seattle ’s Beauty Revolution Magazine. This new online magazine coming in November has a mission to bring to all you eco-conscious fashion and beauty lovers a sustainable life style. Many of the designers practice sustainability with their collection by using vintage pieces. The designers included Malia Peoples, Nicole Hood, Laura Kincaid, Jessica Keen, Antonina Ramsey, Rita Gruzman and Kimberlee Iblings.

Urban Unveiled

For all you blushing brides to be, this was one exquisite event you did not want to miss out on. Urban Unveiled was founded by photographer Sharlane Chase and wedding planners Jesse and Travis from True Colors Event. Their mission behind Urban Unveiled is to bring those getting marry, the best vendors in photography, floral, catering, and well… everything else you can imagine that makes a wedding happen. Their style encompasses class, sophistication, luxury and simply going all out!

The venue, the Benaroya Hall in the heart of downtown Seattle was decorating nicely by Rented Elegance and Design (R.E.D). Catering was done by Wolfgang Puck and it didn’t hurt that the cake vendors presented little baked samples either. They were delicious!

Honestly, I had not anticipated a night of seeing lavishing vendors display their magnificent capabilities. I was solely there for the Luly Yang Bridal Couture show. Yes, I have two girlfriends being wed this upcoming year and I wanted to take great notes so that I can offer advice when needed. However; I am not getting married anytime soon and once I was in awe by the décor, I immediately felt regretful that they couldn’t be there.

The Luly Yang Bridal Couture show only enhanced the event. Once again, Luly was able to stun the crowd with her collection. I loved the flow of the trains, the excellent choice of fabric, the outrageous designs and the list can go on and on. It took my breath away being only a row behind the runway.

I believe this event happens twice a year – February and October for those planning a wedding for fall or spring. Hope to see you there next time.

Portland Fashion Week

PDX has done it again. They’ve taken sustainability into another level. With a runaway made out of 160 recycled water bottles, no wonder Book Moda named Portland Fashion Week ‘the most sustainable fashion week in the whole of USA, if not the world.’ The show was held at 14 Square (a newly built LEED certified building) in the Pearl District from Wednesday, October 8th through Sunday, October 12th.

With a strong emphasis on being green, everything from the sway bags to the lighting of the show were taken into deep consideration. Even the designers were eco-friendly. Lizzie Parker who showcased her collection on Saturday night, is well known in the Seattle area for her eco-friendly contemporary clothing line for women. Other designers presented were Idom, Lucia, Christopher Bevans and May Tee.

I was only able to attend the Saturday night show and was very impressed with the venue, the vendors and the runaway. The show was very similar to the tent outside of Bryant Park for New York fashion week. The variety of vendors in different aspects of fashion was a good and informative browse to have while sipping on my cocktail and waiting for the doors to the showroom to open. I even scored a free shirt from Mabel and Zora! My favorite eco-friendly designs were the paper coutour. Overall, PDX pulled off the second longest running fashion week in the west coast nicely.

Luly Yang's 20/20 Fashion Show - Fashion is in the Eye of the Beholder

Oh la la… couture! Tonight, after a week of built up anticipation, I attended Luly Yang’s 20/20 Fashion Show held at the Fremont Studios. The concept behind the theme 20/20 is to signify the importance of perfect vision when it comes to fashion which Luly believes is in the eye of the beholder. The proceeds from the show went to Camp Korey – a free, fun and safe camp for children of all ages suffering from a serious and life threatening illness.

The show kicked off with strong, brave and beautiful illness fighters from Camp Korey all glam in Luly Yang couture from head to toe. Then clients of Luly Yang stun the crowd with their piece of couture on the runway. At last the Luly Yang collection was shown. There were a total of five gorgeous sets each having their own theme: Eye of beholder, Optical Illusion, Essence of Color, X-ray Vision and Love is Blind. Each set had a strong focus around a specific eye color with a hint of the eye shape thrown on random couture.

Luly Yang also announced that she is opening her second couture boutique shop in Bejing, China this month.
